wawa naman mga dolphins...

got this from an email, just can't help but post this. i'm really fond of watching dolphins, and was planning to watch this at MOA but this article is really an eye opener.

PAWS and EII (Earth Island Institute) had a meeting with the dolphin show organizer Movers and Shakers and SM Investments.

Here are a few things our representatives Trixie (EII) and Anna Cabrera (PAWS) observed in the travelling dolphin show facility:

1. The dolphins did not receive enough protection from the sun - the "roof" on top of the dolphin pool was just a net where the sun's rays passed through. At noontime and up to 3pm, it must be hell for these dolphins.
*At time this picture was taken (3.30pm), the heat wasn't so bad, as can be seen in photos

2. Dolphins swim in an 8ft by 12 meter tank. A size not even one ten thousandth of one percent of the marine mammals' normal habitat size

3. Sea lions were kept in pens only as big as their own body sizes. They were swimming around and around the small confined space. (at this point, Anna was told not to take anymore photos)

4. Dolphins and sea lions have five performances every single day. 11 am, 2pm, 4pm, 6pm and 8pm. The organizer advised that they have very few attendance in the 11 am and 2 pm slots because it was too hot for the audience. To think that the audience area was amply covered, while the dolphin pool only had a transparent net for a roof.

DOLPHIN SHOW FACT SHEET : WHY YOUR COMPANY SHOULD NOT SUPPORT THIS CRUEL SHOW

1. Source of dolphins used in marine shows: dolphins were captured from the wild and their families were killed in Japanese drive fisheries. Parents of the dolphins usually 'interfere' when the hunters try to take the young (trainable) dolphins so they are killed. (We have video footage of this, pls PM me if you want a copy. If you have a copy of the documentary "Earthlings, " similar footage is shown.)

Owners of dolphin shows perpetuate this kind of cruel hunting in the wild because they serve as the market for these hunters. Hence, those who are patronizing dolphin shows are indirectly also contributing to this trade.

Help us stop the killing. Don't Watch Dolphin Shows.

2. Dolphin shows (whether temporary or permanent facilities) are inherently cruel as they shorten the lifespan of dolphins as shown by numerous scientific studies. Dolphins in the wild live up to 50 to 60 years while captive dolphins, if they are lucky, live up to only an average of 15 years.

In Ocean Adventure in Subic, four whales under the age of sexual maturity have already died.

3. Temporary facilities such as traveling dolphin-shows are much more stressful for aquatic animals such as dolphins because they have to be moved time and again after their they have finished their show in a particular area.

If it is stressful to move terrestrial animals such as elephants, tigers, and lions for circuses, it is much more stressful for a dolphin to be moved as they have to be immobilized for the duration of the trip from one location to another. As you all know, dolphins never stop moving in the wild, but when they are moved, they have to be taken out of the water and put into hammocks which is like putting a straightjacket over the animal.

4. Temporary facilities for dolphin shows usually use CHLORINATED water in their tanks which will BLIND the dolphins over time. Temporary facilities, usually smaller than permanent facilities, tend to save up on changing and cleaning the water the dolphins swim on, that is why they use chlorine. The dolphins will also be urinating and defecating in this small space. Over time, you can actually say that these animals will be swimming in their feces.

5. The size of the tank at the Dolphin Show in Mall of Asia is 8 feet by 12 feet (as reported in newspapers). This is not even one ten-thousandth of one percent of marine mammals' normal habitat size. Dolphins swim for hundreds of miles in the ocean No wonder a lot of dolphins are driven to insanity in these types of facilities. This is the worst type of life imprisonment that a living creature can ever be subjected to.

*Clarification that SM wishes to put forth: The dolphin show is not a mall event and is actually not even technically located within the mall grounds but in SM Bay City. However, the event posters clearly bear the SM Mall of Asia logo (an error, according to SM Investments) .
