movie reviews

last friday, i took the day off from work. my mom and i eventually went to Festival Mall and watched Chicken Little. i had no plans of watching the said movie, had i not heard from the news that a Filipino was behind the making of these cartoon movie (see story below). anyway, i find the movie a good watch, specially if you're looking to find a good laugh, and it also has its own moral story.

afterwards, i proceeded to watch Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire. after three weeks of showing in local theaters, i have second thoughts of watching this movie due to feedbacks i am getting from those who had already watched it. but since my mom knows that i was waiting for the movie a long time, she persuaded me to go ahead and watch it. after watching it, i find Chicken Little more okay than HP. maybe because i wasn't expecting anything from Chicken Little and had high hopes on HP. I miss the melodramatic scenes in HP which was in the book. The movie was very much fast-paced, and still consumes around 3hrs of viewing. anyway, i'll be waiting for two movies next year, x-men and superman :)

Ralph Fernan: The big Pinoy behind 'Chicken Little'
By DENNIS LADAW

Walt Disney’s newest animated feature "Chicken Little" is making waves at the American box office, as grosses hit nearly $120 million since it first opened three weeks ago.

A very loose adaptation of the venerable children’s story, Chicken Little is bound to be as popular as the other Disney characters. This quirky new character is the archetype 98-ounce weakling, yet children will soon be posing for pictures with his six-foot-tall mascot in Disney’s theme parks around the world.

Nobody could be prouder of this little hero than Philippine-born Ralph Fernan, who was responsible for animating both the title character and his father, Buck Cluck. It was up to Fernan to give life to these two lead chickens. He clearly had the most challenging task of giving the film its heart.

"As you have probably noticed, there are many scenes between Chicken Little and his father," the 40-something Fernan told Life & Times via phone patch. "So as animator, I had to build a rapport between father and son and make it look realistic."

Many of the scenes between the older chicken and his tiny son are tender and actually human, and they comprise the best moments of this otherwise rapidly paced CGI movie. Yet Fernan refused to take the entire credit. He attributes the success of the film to a lot of contributors, from the gifted voice talents, the art directors and the overall director Mark Dindal.

With all the talented animators and art directors working on the film, it seems that director Dindal would have little else to do, but Fernan said that on the contrary, he was the central guiding force of the whole production.

"True, we all had our duties but it was Mark who set the tone and direction of the film. He’d advise us in certain scenes and describe their purpose. How the characters should react to certain situations, how the action ought to be depicted and he more or less choreographed entire scenes," he explained.

It was Dindal who also coached the voice talents, which included major stars like Steve Zahn, Patrick Stewart, Don Knotts and Joan Cusack.

From UE’s pride to Disney’s gem

Fernan was born in Manila and is a Fine Arts graduate of the University of the East. Although he majored in painting, he found himself working on animation. "My first stint with animation was when I was hired by the local studio of Hanna-Barbera," he said.

"That was in the eighties, not long after I finished college. You can say that it was at Hanna-Barbera where I got my formal training, where I learned the ropes."

Most children are familiar with many of Hanna-Barbera’s beloved characters -- from Scooby-Doo and Yogi Bear to The Flintstones and Josie and the Pussycats.

Fernan was assistant editor of the Hanna-Barbera’s feature-length cartoon Once Upon A Forest (1993), which featured the voice talents of Michael Crawford and Ben Vereen.

Sadly, however, the company was compelled to shut down its Manila studio due to financial difficulties.

As with most of the talented Filipino animators, Fernan decided to seek his fortunes in other countries. There were fewer opportunities for animators in the Philippines, he explained. While others found employment in Australia, Fernan and a few others tried their luck in the United States. Fernan has so far been the most fortunate Filipino animator. He found work at Burbank Studios and was animator for the features of Turner Pictures and Warner Brothers. Among his credits are the highly acclaimed Iron Giant (1999) and Stuart Little 2 (2003).

Not long after, he was hired by Walt Disney and was immediately assigned to Chicken Little. "We started to work on Chicken Little two years ago. It all began with storyboarding and scripts which were continuously revised," Fernan recalled.

Fernan noted there are several Filipinos working in Disney, both in the production and administration’s departments. "We’re all so proud to be part of this great company. I’ve met Roy Disney, the son of Walt Disney. He looks a lot like his father!" he said.

For Disney, Chicken Little was a major gamble that paid off. It was the first CGI film, the studio produced on its own. (Pixar produced most of its CGI productions.) The studio first adapted Chicken Little for the screen in 1943 using traditional animation.

"Of course, traditional animation will always have its advantages, but with CGI, the work is faster and easier. I would like to work on conventional animation again," he said.

Fernan resides with his wife and son in Altadena, California. While he’s enjoying his work in Disney, he said he hopes the animation industry in the Philippines would eventually get off the ground. "Then perhaps the talent wouldn’t have to migrate to other countries," he said.

Makita Kang Muli

Makita Kang Muli

Sugarfree

Bawat sandali ng aking buhay
Pagmamahal mo ang aking taglay
San man mapadpad ng hangin
Hindi magbabago aking pagtingin
Pangako natin sa Maykapal
Na tayo lamang sa habang buhay
Maghintay

Makita kang muli, makita kang muli
Makita kang muli

YOU KNOW YOU ARE LIVING IN 2005,WHEN

YOU KNOW YOU ARE LIVING IN 2005,WHEN....

1. You haven't played solitaire with real cards in years.
2. You have a list of 10 phone numbers to reach your family of 3.

3. You e-mail the person who lives in the house next door.

4. Your reason for not staying in touch with friends and

family is that they don't have e-mail addresses.

5. You've sat at the same desk for four years and

worked for three Different companies.

6. You learn about your redundancy on the 10 o'clock news.

7. Your boss doesn't have the ability to do your job.

8. You pull up in your own driveway and use

your mobile phone to see if anyone is home

to help you carry in the groceries.

10. Leaving the house without your mobile phone,

which you didn't have the first 20 or 30 (or 60) years

of your life, is now a cause for panic and you turn

around to go and get it.

11. You get up in the morning and go on line

before getting your coffee.

12. You're reading this and nodding and laughing.

13. Even worse, you know exactly to whom you are

going to forward this message.

14. You are too busy to notice there was no #9 on this list.

15. You actually scrolled back up to check that

there wasn't a #9 on this list.

AND NOW YOU ARE LAUGHING at yourself. Go on, forward this to your friends....you know you want to!

habulan

almost a month has passed since i had updated my blog. i wish to change my blog's skin but i think that can wait, for now.

anyways, sobrang maraming nangyari sa akin for the past days. i have told my boss that i can no longer accept another extension contract since i'll be moving on to a new company which has offered me a regular position, not to mention a higher rate. dun na nagsimula ang problema. i have 2 more months before my contract nung malaman nya e tuliro na sya. so imagine kung ano na lang ang kinikilos nya ngayong 1 month na lang ang natitira. he's very much grumpy nowadays. di na nya ako kinakausap, which is, for me okay dahil bawas nangungulit at mas marami akong nagagawa. at di ko na nadidinig ang nakakairitang line nya na "mataas kasi ang presyo mo" or "masyadong kang mahal" at "di ka namin kaya".

since i started working, i never begged for any company to hire me or keep me in their workforce. pero bakit may mga times ngayon na parang utang na loob ko pa sa kanila na hinire nila ako? parang gusto nilang palabasin na wala akong utang na loob at aalis na ako ngayon. i mean, my contract will end on january 3rd, at wala akong viniolate sa contract na yun. tatapusin ko yun kahit di ko na feel. and im doing all the docs in preparation sa susunod na hahawak ng project.

the ceo of my agency, which happens to be his elder sister is also very much affected. at yung pagkaapekto nya sa situation e sana wag makaapekto sa relationship namin, as frends. i mean, yes, we're not that close, but during the course of our employer-employee relationship, we had bonded a frendship. anyway, kung maaapektuhan, e wala akong magagawa, blood is thicker than water, ika nga. but still, alam nya kung ano ang kalakaran sa agency, and therefore should not blame me.

missing someone...

im missing the long talks and bantering we used to share.. i know that you're busy.. that both our scheds wouldn't meet for sometime now.. but im glad na kahit pano, nagkakausap pa rin tayo.. pero miss pa rin kita..

Monday, October 31, 2005

a very busy day for me.. i went to cubao early this morning and brought the perfume orders to my partner's house. then, i went back home around 1030am to fulfill my promise to my mom. we went to festival mall instead of makati and spend some bonding time together. around 3pm, we went home, and due to tiredness, i fell asleep, and woke up late for my other appointment in cainta. i went to cubao to ride an fx going to sta lucia, but it was taking 48yrs, so i texted my 2 frends on how to get to sta lucia without taking the fx and taxi. finally, i took a jeep going to antipolo, and arrived in sta lucia, an hour late (or more?) for my appointment.. haay life.. adventure ito, hehehe.. dun ko lang din nalaman na 2 pala ang sta lucia, and i was waiting in the old one, while my friend was waiting on the new one, hehehe.. nagkita din kami syempre :) unfortunately, di kami nakaattend sa pamamahayag.. i hope na next time e makapunta na kami..

career and success

a very inspiring and eye-opening article, for those who are struggling in their work and finding their way to success, taken from Career Magazine

One in four workers is dissatisfied with their current job, according to the recent “Plans for 2004” survey by CareerBuilder.com. In any conversation or gathering, the topic tends to lean or end up towards our jobs. People love discussing the work that they do and finding out about others. We identify ourselves to the work that we do. Take some time to really listen and you will hear the dissatisfaction that is in the workplace. Even careers that come in a well-wrapped package of excellent salaries, benefits and privileges are not an exception at all. How and where do you start your search for a career? Whether you are fresh from training or coming back from a break in your working life, I have outlined a simple way of getting there:

Your Interests. What is it that really motivates you? What are you passionate about? Where do you get that driving force to overcome any obstacles that working life fires your way? I always say to clients to take the time to re-assess their life and work carefully. The first place to look is where your interests lie. Recall a time in your life since childhood where you have felt that strong passion flowing through you. What are you really interested in? What makes the butterflies in your belly fly all over or make your heart beat faster? What kind of work will get you out of bed every morning feeling refreshed from yesterday and ready to face another day in today’s battlefield of work?

A colleague had shared with me this story of a successful client who said to her that the only thing that seems to interest him when he was in school was the lunch break. Why? It is the only time where he could socialize with others and really connect with people. Assessing his situation when he was in the process of finding a career path, he held that thought dearly in his mind and came up with being an entrepreneur in financial advising. This person is way ahead of his time now building an empire that came from his interest in socializing and relating with people. He figured it out himself that with his strong interest in making a difference in a person’s life plus his deep desire in financial advising, he had found the path where he would like to go.

Your Beliefs and Values. A salesman who has over 25 years of experience and was laid off due to downsizing once said to me that as long as he believes in the product or service himself, he could definitely sell it! He also mentioned that the last thing he would like to do five days a week is to market something that doesn’t work and will only waste the consumer’s money. Isn’t this a formula for success? Put yourself in your clients’ shoes and ask yourself if you have really done a great job. If you value honesty, you have to practice it first and be able to give it to others in what you do.

Your Personality. Know thy self - another formula for success. There is an abundance of career assessments and services out in the market that one can avail of to get to know one’s self better. These tools whether self scoring or administered by a qualified professional will be most effective with the person’s knowledge of himself. They are there to guide and make you think outside the box. If you cannot do repetitive tasks over and over again then, working as an assembler of car parts will not be a good match for you. Recognizing where your strengths and weaknesses lie and finding a place where you could utilize these strengths to benefit the company and improving the weaknesses sounds like a good plan.
Dare to Take Risks. Risks taken after sufficient researching are calculated risks that would yield positive outcomes. Most of us get too comfortable of our existing situations even if we know very well that they are redundant or worse, obsolete. I could understand how change could generate fears of the unknown and of the unexpected. Life without change does not open doors to more or better opportunities. With our current business and technology moving so rapidly forward, how can we stick to old ways that do not work? This is why we have to undergo career and professional upgrading – to keep up with the flow of things instead of being left out. The world of work is now a life long learning field. It will require a lot of risk taking, letting go of things that do not work and being versatile – wearing different hats/multi-tasking.

Your Vision, Your Map. Through all these career searching or career change, never lose track of your end result. Write them down. Sound corny? Anybody who wants to invest their most valued time and effort into achieving their goals will not go in there without a plan. Why do you think builders and architects work on their blueprints first? You don’t put up the walls of a house without laying a strong base foundation first, right? Your vision is your guide, your reminder and your map. Also, dare to dream! Dreaming brings out the creativity in us. Creativity puts the glow and uniqueness to our work. It’s the one that sets us apart and adds colour to our achievements. Dreaming without doing achieves nothing. Make a list of things to do, do them (this is the most important step – to really do it!) and go back and experience the joy of putting a check mark beside the things you have accomplished.

Lastly, Take Ownership. As an adult job seeker, your time is up in pointing fingers at other people and putting the blame on them for your failures. You need to stop running and avoiding the truth! Face the facts, support your decision with important research and consult qualified people. I interviewed at least four people in my field of work in person before investing in a course that turned my career and life around. Coming to Canada as an immigrant and moving from one job to the other just to pay the bills, I lost that drive to excel and love what I do. I felt that I have turned into a robot programmed to do the same things over and over again. I was caught in the “Rat Race” of life and didn’t know how to get out. I made the decision to pursue a career that will revive me, make me look forward to coming to work everyday and live my passion of making a difference in other people’s lives. It wasn’t an easy road, there were quite a number of bumpy rides but that burning desire inside me carried me through it and made me appreciate the meaning of the work I do.

You Took My Heart Away

Lyrics taken from the album "Blue Night "

You Took My Heart Away

(Music and words: Jascha Richter)

Staring at the moon so blue
Turning all my thoughts to you
I was without hopes or dreams
I tried to dull an inner scream but you
saw me through

Walking on a path of air
See your faces everywhere
As you melt this heart of stone
you take my hand to guide me home and now
I'm in love

Chorus: You took my heart away
when my whole world was gray
You gave me everything
and a little bit more
And when it's cold at night
and you sleep by my side
you become the meaning of my life

Living in a world so cold
you are there to warm my soul
You came to mend a broken heart
You gave my life a brand new start and now
I'm in love

Chorus:
You took...

Holding your hand
I won't fear tomorrow
Here were we stand
we'll never be alone
