Push

Last Monday, I was able to watch PUsh and I wasn't a bit disappointed. I like the twists, specially how Nick had planned their way out of the predicament they're in.

Inkheart

I've been meaning to write this entry since Feb 1 but my tight sched prevented me from doing so. Anyway, last Jan 30, I was able to watch Inkheart a real cute guy caught my attention. I was never for tanned guys, but Rafi Gavron , who played as one of the thieves in a book that came to life, also stole my eyes. Funny when I searched the net, he isn't really tanned after all. But I find him more attractive in his tanned look

lucky me

Last Thursday, November 29, Trillanes, together with his other supporters, went to Manila Peninsula to cool down (accdg to Going Bulilit, hehehe). That incident prompted our COO to suspend work just right after lunch. so of I went, and watched "Enchanted" at Festival Mall. The movie was cool, my mom wanted to watch it after I told her the story. I'm hoping I can grab a DVD of it, or better, if we can still catch it in theaters.

~~~~~~~~~
As was the tradition in our company, every last working day of the month, they held a lunch party. This we treat as a substitute to the 1k food allowance they removed. Usually, we have 4 viands, rice, and soft drinks. These viands may consist of 1 spaghetti noodles. But last Thursday, they only have 2 viands for us, and 1 of this is the rubber-like lumpiang shanghai. Lucky for me I have brought my lunch baon.
~~~~~~

Reporters covering the Manila Peninsula incident was also handcuffed using straws and taken into custody for identity verification. This also resulted in a one-instance curfew from 12mn to 5am. Now, these media men are the ones suing those who arrested them. Well, life's like that. Gantihan lang yan, hehehe

spidey 3

I was one of the many who watched Spiderman 3 on its first day of showing. In fact, I belong to the second batch who watched it. I was eager to catch the closing statements of the story, and luckily, had found this on the net.

"Whatever comes our way, whatever battle is raging inside us, we always have a choice. It's the choices that make us what we are, and we can always choose to do the right thing."

This reminds me of what my minister friend told me on one of our talks. God won't make the choice for us, He'll give us options and it's for us to decide which to choose.

movie reviews

last friday, i took the day off from work. my mom and i eventually went to Festival Mall and watched Chicken Little. i had no plans of watching the said movie, had i not heard from the news that a Filipino was behind the making of these cartoon movie (see story below). anyway, i find the movie a good watch, specially if you're looking to find a good laugh, and it also has its own moral story.

afterwards, i proceeded to watch Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire. after three weeks of showing in local theaters, i have second thoughts of watching this movie due to feedbacks i am getting from those who had already watched it. but since my mom knows that i was waiting for the movie a long time, she persuaded me to go ahead and watch it. after watching it, i find Chicken Little more okay than HP. maybe because i wasn't expecting anything from Chicken Little and had high hopes on HP. I miss the melodramatic scenes in HP which was in the book. The movie was very much fast-paced, and still consumes around 3hrs of viewing. anyway, i'll be waiting for two movies next year, x-men and superman :)

Ralph Fernan: The big Pinoy behind 'Chicken Little'
By DENNIS LADAW

Walt Disney’s newest animated feature "Chicken Little" is making waves at the American box office, as grosses hit nearly $120 million since it first opened three weeks ago.

A very loose adaptation of the venerable children’s story, Chicken Little is bound to be as popular as the other Disney characters. This quirky new character is the archetype 98-ounce weakling, yet children will soon be posing for pictures with his six-foot-tall mascot in Disney’s theme parks around the world.

Nobody could be prouder of this little hero than Philippine-born Ralph Fernan, who was responsible for animating both the title character and his father, Buck Cluck. It was up to Fernan to give life to these two lead chickens. He clearly had the most challenging task of giving the film its heart.

"As you have probably noticed, there are many scenes between Chicken Little and his father," the 40-something Fernan told Life & Times via phone patch. "So as animator, I had to build a rapport between father and son and make it look realistic."

Many of the scenes between the older chicken and his tiny son are tender and actually human, and they comprise the best moments of this otherwise rapidly paced CGI movie. Yet Fernan refused to take the entire credit. He attributes the success of the film to a lot of contributors, from the gifted voice talents, the art directors and the overall director Mark Dindal.

With all the talented animators and art directors working on the film, it seems that director Dindal would have little else to do, but Fernan said that on the contrary, he was the central guiding force of the whole production.

"True, we all had our duties but it was Mark who set the tone and direction of the film. He’d advise us in certain scenes and describe their purpose. How the characters should react to certain situations, how the action ought to be depicted and he more or less choreographed entire scenes," he explained.

It was Dindal who also coached the voice talents, which included major stars like Steve Zahn, Patrick Stewart, Don Knotts and Joan Cusack.

From UE’s pride to Disney’s gem

Fernan was born in Manila and is a Fine Arts graduate of the University of the East. Although he majored in painting, he found himself working on animation. "My first stint with animation was when I was hired by the local studio of Hanna-Barbera," he said.

"That was in the eighties, not long after I finished college. You can say that it was at Hanna-Barbera where I got my formal training, where I learned the ropes."

Most children are familiar with many of Hanna-Barbera’s beloved characters -- from Scooby-Doo and Yogi Bear to The Flintstones and Josie and the Pussycats.

Fernan was assistant editor of the Hanna-Barbera’s feature-length cartoon Once Upon A Forest (1993), which featured the voice talents of Michael Crawford and Ben Vereen.

Sadly, however, the company was compelled to shut down its Manila studio due to financial difficulties.

As with most of the talented Filipino animators, Fernan decided to seek his fortunes in other countries. There were fewer opportunities for animators in the Philippines, he explained. While others found employment in Australia, Fernan and a few others tried their luck in the United States. Fernan has so far been the most fortunate Filipino animator. He found work at Burbank Studios and was animator for the features of Turner Pictures and Warner Brothers. Among his credits are the highly acclaimed Iron Giant (1999) and Stuart Little 2 (2003).

Not long after, he was hired by Walt Disney and was immediately assigned to Chicken Little. "We started to work on Chicken Little two years ago. It all began with storyboarding and scripts which were continuously revised," Fernan recalled.

Fernan noted there are several Filipinos working in Disney, both in the production and administration’s departments. "We’re all so proud to be part of this great company. I’ve met Roy Disney, the son of Walt Disney. He looks a lot like his father!" he said.

For Disney, Chicken Little was a major gamble that paid off. It was the first CGI film, the studio produced on its own. (Pixar produced most of its CGI productions.) The studio first adapted Chicken Little for the screen in 1943 using traditional animation.

"Of course, traditional animation will always have its advantages, but with CGI, the work is faster and easier. I would like to work on conventional animation again," he said.

Fernan resides with his wife and son in Altadena, California. While he’s enjoying his work in Disney, he said he hopes the animation industry in the Philippines would eventually get off the ground. "Then perhaps the talent wouldn’t have to migrate to other countries," he said.

sheeesh... so many beautiful movies being shown and so little time.. would have watched "Bringing Down the House" but failed to catch it due to hectic sched.. well, maybe it wasn't that good.. previously planned to watch "Detective Cody Banks" or something but lost my interest after reading its teaser.. planning to watch "Bruce Almighty" sometime next week, i hope it will go through.. pero sa wakas! finally watched "Matrix Reload" on its 3rd week (i think) of being shown here.. kala ko di na ako aabot due to bad weather.. well, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise, at least, i didnt have to endure long lines and SRO at the cinema... ganda ng effects!

for the record.. did u know that the producers of matrix has made a freeway, not a virtual freeway, but a solid mile and a half (i think, not so sure about the exact figure) for the sole purpose of the movie? that's how high-budgeted the film is :D
the made-for-the-movie freeway

got this from an email the week Matrix Reloaded was shown... just sharing it with you guys..

THE MATRIX (PART 1):

Current Time Frame in the Real World:
Almost in the Year 2199. Nobody is sure of the date
bacause they lost track of it since the war between
man and machine began and when "the sun died".

History:
Human created robots or A.I. to help them in
everything. When the A.I. had more population than
human and became more intellegent and can think for
themselves, the human destroyed them. The surviving
A.I.s or machines created their own community. And
then the time comes when human and machines got into
battle, no one knows how the war started.

Then the sun died, the source of energy. It was then
that they found out that human is a very strong source
of energy that they need. So in order to
survive, the machines gathered the dead humans and
liquified them to grow a new human and in order to get
the human stay asleep they created a program named
"The Matrix".

The human survivors bore into the earth's core and
created a city - the Zion. They created a machine in
the city that will generate powers that they need to
survive, electricity, heat, etc.

When the humans have known about how the machines get
their energy source, they started to make the force to
free all the humans that was used by the
mahines as "batteries".

What Is The Matrix:
Simply a simulation of Earth. The humans used by
machines as their "Batteries" are put into sleep in a
large tube and their mind is placed in a dreamworld.
The dreamworld is The Matrix.

The Humans who comes in and out of the Matrix
(Morpheus, Trinity, etc):
They are real humans. As the humans grow older, they
continue to evolve. Their minds are stronger and with
a stronger mind you can control or
change the codes of the matrix as you are inside it.
It's like a Text Box inside one of the Forms which
compose a Sofware System. The Text box is the human,
the Form is one of the places inside the
Matrix, and the whole Sofware System is the Matrix.
For example, the programmer codes that the TextBox
should have a Text value equal to "I".

Normal Text Box whould just have a text value of "I",
but with a stronger mind, the text box can change the
programmer's code by it's self and make it's text
value to whatever the text box wants.

That's why Morpheus and Trinity can jump higher
because they can change the Matrix programmers code
about the gravity. They are stronger because
the can change the matrix's codes about strength, and
so on.

The One / Mr. Anderson / Neo:
He has the strongest mind of all humans. He can
really control the Matrix the way he wants it. At
first he doesn't know how to do it but when he was
killed (not really) by Smith by a gun, he was shocked
to know that he can really control the Matrix's Code.
Trinity's kiss was a big help on discovering that he
was not dead yet. When he became fully aware of it,
he woke up and defy's the Matrix's codes about the
laws of physics, so he can make the bullet stop, he
can fly, he is so fast and powerful, and do other
things with his mind that can really change the Codes
of the Matrix. He can even delete a program inside the
Matrix... he deleted Agent Smith.

THE MATRIX REALODED (PART 2):

Situation:
Neo is almost at his full potential. He can now see
the codes around the Matrix, that's why he sees people
as codes shaped as human. He can fly,
he can can the bullet out of a human body, he can do
all stuff that defy Matrix Codes, even getting the
heart to function again.
The Sentinels (squid like machines) are boring holes
in the Earth to reach Zion and destroy it.
Morpheus and the crew wants to destroy the Matrix
once and for all with the use of Neo, and they want to
detroy it inside the Matrix where Neo is
invinsible.

Who Is The Man At Zion Who Tried to Kill Neo:
In one of the early scenes, Agent Smith load himself
to one of the human who is holding the phone and going
back to the Real World. Before the man
goes home, Agent Smith has successfully loaded himself
to the man. So Agent Smith was able to make it back to
the real world inside the man's body. That man was the
traitor who tried to stab Neo at the back.
The Sentinels was able to locate where to bore a hole
to get to the Zion because of Agent Smith. He was
inside Zion and can easily give information of Zion's
location and force.

How Was It Possible That Neo Got Trinity Back:
Since everything inside the Matrix are defined by
programming codes and Neo can modify those codes
because of his extraordinary strong mind, so that
means that he can also modify the code that "a
heartbeat will stop when a human body is badly wounded
and about to die" and he can get the heart to
work again. It's just all simply modifying the
Matrix's Codes.

The Oracle:
She is not human. She is an exile program, a program
that is meant to be deleted and is now hiding. But
that fact is not clear yet since the Architech/Father
of The Matrix said that she is the Mother, everything
she said could be a lie. She said that The One can
destroy The Matrix but it turned out that it was all a
lie.

Agent Smith:
He was reprogrammed/recreated and now has the ability
to load his self (or his program) to other human
brains or other programs. How he was freed by
Neo and how he was recreated may be revealed at Matrix
Revolutions.

The Richman's House:
It is a portal in the Matrix. You can reach different
part/places of The Matrix by using it's door, its like
the Warp Zone in Super Mario Bros.

The Key Maker:
Not human. A program with only one purpose... to
create the key to the source (and maybe all the keys
needed in the whole Matrix).

Summary So Far:
There has been 5 "The One" and everyone was defeated
by the Father of the Matrix.
Everytime "The One" reaches the Source of the Matrix,
He (they) always react the same way.
Everytime "The One" reaches the Source of the Matrix,
The Father redesign the Matrix so that it can always
defeat "The One".
Neo was the 6th of "The One's" and hes ia the only
who reacted differently and was the fastest to realize
what is happening.
The humans need to defend Zion from the Zetinel
because Matrix was not destroyed (It might just
reaload again when the Father is finished
redesigning The Matrix into a better program).
Neo also has a connection and power to the machines
even in the Real World.

(Why? maybe Revolutions will explain it)
